The Victorian School Sports Awards is an annual event which rewards excellence across all categories of major school sports. The awards are given to students, teachers, parents and volunteers who have excelled or made an outstanding contribution to school sport.
The individual student award, known as a Sporting Blue is identified around the world as an accolade of sporting excellence by young people and is distinguished by a two-coloured ribbon attached to a traditional bronze medallion.
Two BHSSC students, Jasmin Starr and Najvada George were recently presented with their awards at a ceremony at the MCG.
Najvada received her award for her outstanding achievements in Basketball. She has been selected in the Australian Sapphires under 17 team, which has qualified to go to the World Games this year and she was a member of the Victorian state team that won the national title in 2015. Najvada has been named in the Dandenong Rangers WNBL development squad.
Jasmin received her Sportiing Blue award for outstanding achievements in tennis. She received her first Sporting Blue medal for tennis in 2012 when she was a member of the Team Vic Bruce Cup team. She followed this with two School Sport Victoria State titles in 2013 and 2014. Jasmin has twice been a member of the under 19 Victorian Pizzey Cup Team and was chosen for the All Australian Merit Team. She has twice been a quarter finalist in the under 19 Australia Cup and has represented Victoria at the Bruce Cup and the Australian Team Championships.
Jasmin plays Grade 1 Pennant tennis for Kooyong and is currently ranked 117 in Australia.
