Basketball Academy
The BHSSC Basketball Academy began in 1995 and it has become one of the most successful basketball programs in the country attracting students from metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria as well as from interstate and overseas. Whilst aiming to improve the performance of every student athlete, the program has been very successful in providing pathways for students wishing to participate in basketball at an elite level.
Over the years, both the boys and girls basketball teams have won numerous Victorian and National titles with College teams regularly featuring in the finals series of these tournaments. The BHSSC Senior Boys and Intermediate Girls teams both were gold medalists at the 2017 Australian Schools Championships.
In addition, many BHSSC basketball athletes have accomplished significant individual achievements including:-
- AIS scholarships
- State and Australian team selection
- NBL and WNBL contracts
- USA College Scholarships
Our most famous and high profile past student being Ben Simmons, 2018 NBA Rookie of the Year and point guard for the Philadelphia '76 ers.
Our coaching staff have developed strong connections with state, national and international amateur and professional basketball organisations and our academy is regularly visited by renowned basketball identities including USA college coaches, past and present Australian coaches (Brian Goorjian) and past and present Australian players including David Anderson, Andrew Bogut and Lauren Jackson.
State Development Program (SDP)
The College has developed a strong partnership with Basketball Victoria and is currently hosting the prestigious Basketball Victoria SDP program twice per week. The SDP is designed to provide elite development opportunities and training to identified U16 and U18 men and women in the metropolitan region, assisting in their short and long term prospects. Basketball Victoria's High Performance curriculum is delivered through this program. Currently 20 BHSSC students are participating in this program and enjoying the benefits of the SDP whilst minimising travel and out of school hours commitments.
