Box Hill Senior Secondary College was originally established as a technical school in 1943 and was rebadged with its current name and structure in 1993

Key Historical Points

  • Foundation as a Technical School: The institution was founded on February 2, 1943, as the “Box Hill Technical School for Boys”. It was established to meet the demand for technical education for boys in the eastern suburbs who were being turned away from other institutions like Swinburne Technical School.
  • Curriculum Focus: In its early years, the curriculum was focused on technical subjects such as sheetmetal work, technical drawing, and carpentry.
  • Evolution to Senior Secondary College: In 1993, the school was rebadged as Box Hill Senior Secondary College, shifting its focus to cater specifically to students in Years 10 to 12. It is now a co-educational college for Years 9-12.
  • Pioneering Sports Academies: The college is known for being the first school in Australia to introduce specialist school-based Sports Academies. The inaugural Basketball Academy began in 1995, followed later by AFL, AFLW, and Tennis programs, providing pathways for student-athletes to pursue elite sports alongside their academic studies.

Academic and Vocational Pathways: Throughout its history, the college has evolved to offer a diverse range of academic and applied learning programs, including the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM), Headstart (School Based Apprenticeships)and various vocational education and on-site training (VET) opportunities such as Building & Construction, Electro-Technology, Sport & Recreation, Plumbing, Horticulture & Landscaping, and Hospitality-Cookery.
