Principal’s Welcome

Welcome to Box Hill Senior Secondary College; a Years 9-12 Senior College operating in the tranquil surrounds of Mont Albert North since 1943. Our school is described as the education ‘gem of the inner east’. Set on a large campus with an abundant amount of facilities and space, our school caters for students across the following pathways:

  • Sports Academy (being a Specialist Sports School, the first in Australia)
  • Trade and applied learning, including a large onsite VET program
  • Arts Program
  • Traditional VCE and VM pathway
  • International Student Program (ISP), which is fully integrated with the mainstream campus, providing a multicultural and diverse learning experience for our students.

Our commitment is to provide an individualised pathway for our students that prepares them for a future in our ever changing world. The senior secondary environment and our large array of pathway programs and specialist programs allow us to better tailor individual programs for our students that are aligned with their chosen path. Many students choose to do a mix of our programs offered.

With a wide range of academic, applied learning, visual and creative arts, elite sports academies and industry-based training and vocational pathway courses, we can cater for our students’ needs in these areas from Year 9 onwards. Our whole school learning program includes the opportunity for VCE and VET acceleration in the middle years and affords our students access to specilaised sport and art programs and Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs such as Plumbing, Horticulture, Building & Construction, Hospitality, Sport and Recreation, Sports Coaching or Electro-Technology (all delivered on-site) and Headstart (School Based Apprenticeships).

As the ‘first Sports Academy School’ in Australia, we also provide passionate student-athletes with the Sports Academy programs of Basketball, AFL/AFLW and Tennis. We are exploring future expansion into soccer and other sports if there is demand.

Our students are what make our College great! At BHSSC, you will find a senior secondary environment, where our students are treated as young adults. Student leadership and student voice is crucial to our identity and the success of our College. Social responsibility, personal leadership and being active members in our community our what we pride ourselves on.

Our staff choose to work here, and are enthusiastic, empathetic and committed to the individual success of our students. At our College, you will find all staff on a first name basis with students and no school uniform, breaking down the traditional hierarchical boundaries for students to thrive in a senior environment.

Enrolment at our College is by application, with an interview to determine an individual program. We do have a small school zone (findmyschool.vic.gov.au) where students residing in this zone are guaranteed a place at our school, which is determined on the basis of your permanent residential address. Our total enrolment is around 250 students. We are expanding our programs to provide additional enrolment capacity, while also keeping our ‘small school feel’, so every student is seen, known and valued in our community.

Most of our students come from out of zone and across metropolitan Melbourne. We welcome all students and families to consider us as a potential school of choice, and also welcome international student enrolments through the year to join our community.

I look forward to meeting you as part of a College tour, and discussing if our ‘gem of the inner east’ is the right place for you or your child to thrive.
