Wellbeing

Inclusion, Engagement and Wellbeing

At Box Hill Senior Secondary College, we believe that every young person deserves to learn in an environment where they feel safe, supported, valued, and inspired to succeed. Our inclusive approach to education recognises that each student’s journey is unique — and we are committed to helping every learner thrive academically, socially, and personally.

As a Senior Secondary College, we focus on individual pathways to success, working in partnership with students, families, and staff to ensure that every learner is ready to learn, resilient, and future-ready. We celebrate diversity in all its forms and embrace the principle that “every student can achieve success given the right environment and supports” (Dr. Lyn Sharratt).

Our inclusive culture is strengthened through opportunities for student voice and agency — from student-led clubs and leadership programs to sporting, arts, and technology pathways — where young people can explore their passions, express their individuality, and develop a strong sense of belonging.

A Team Approach to Student Wellbeing

The Inclusion, Engagement and Wellbeing Team is led by an Assistant Principal, alongside the Leading Teacher – Sub-School Leader, supported by Education Support Staff who provide both counselling and classroom assistance. We are also proud to have a Mental Health Practitioner as part of our wellbeing team, ensuring that every student has access to professional support when needed.

At the heart of our wellbeing framework is advocacy. Each student is connected with a dedicated Teacher Mentor who builds a trusted relationship, monitors progress, and champions the student’s growth throughout their time at the College.

The GEM Program – Gratitude, Empathy & Mindfulness

Our GEM program underpins our commitment to developing well-rounded, compassionate, and self-aware learners. Through GEM, students are encouraged to reflect, connect, and take ownership of their learning journey by focusing on:

  • Success for every learner – recognising and celebrating growth in all its forms
  • Respect and relationships – building a caring and inclusive school community
  • Attendance and engagement – valuing participation as a key to success
  • Student agency – empowering students to shape their learning and school experience
  • Individual needs – providing tailored support to ensure equitable access and opportunity
  • Character strengths – developing self-awareness, resilience, and confidence
  • Career and pathway guidance – supporting students to plan purposeful futures
  • Health, wellbeing, and resilience – promoting balance, reflection, and lifelong wellbeing habits

At Box Hill Senior Secondary College, inclusion and wellbeing are not just programs — they are part of who we are. We are committed to nurturing a school culture where every student feels known, respected, and supported to reach their full potential.
