Football - AFL & AFLW

Football men/women

 The BHSSC AFL Academy began in 1996 and is acknowledged as one of the most successful AFL programs in the State. College football teams have successfully competed in SSV and Herald Sun competitions each year regularly winning or being runners-up in the championships.

Since the program's commencement, over 30 students have been drafted into AFL clubs including current players, Robbie Gray (Port Adelaide), James Parsons (Geelong), and Tay Duman (Fremantle Dockers).  Many students have also accomplished significant individual achievements including:-

      • representation in Vic Metro U18 squads and WAFL teams;
      • recipients of AIS scholarships

 In 2018, a dedicated AFLW program commenced and to date, more than 30 female athletes have participated in this program. It is one of the fastest growing and most popular sport programs in the College.  Past student, Tilly Lucas-Rodd (AFLW-Carlton) is currently playing in the AFLW competition and past student and current BHSSC AFLW coach, Penny Cula Reid, played for Collingwood in the first season of the AFLW competition.

The football program aims to assist elite junior football players by providing a training program which:-

      • assists in improving their fitness and conditioning
      • improves their technical skills through ball centred activites: and
      • improves decision making skills and game strategies

Fitness and conditioning training is conducted onsite in the College's fully equipped gymnasium and all other footbal related training is conducted onsite &/or on nearby Council ovals.

Important community partnerships have been developed with the Collingwood Football Club, the AFL (Vic) Ltd, and the Oakleigh Chargers Football Club.  These organisations provide coaches for the academy football teams as well as providing students with the opportunities to

  •  train  and participate in leadership development programs conducted at the Collingwood Football Club;
  • participate in pre-season training with the Oakleigh Chargers Football Club and the Collingwood VFLW team.

Competitions

The school takes part in School Sport Victoria (SSV) competitions. The Senior AFL squad participates in the Premier League (SSV) which is the elite AFL competition within the SSV.
